INTERNATIONAL DANCE EXCHANGES
Movement Exchange hosts international dance exchanges that bring together dancers of all styles and backgrounds to engage in service.
Become a dance diplomat by joining an international dance exchange. As a dance diplomat, you will:
Dance with Movement Exchange this summer from July 14-23, 2017 for our very first exchange to Brazil! Take classes in traditional Brazilian dance, visit Rio de Janeiro's iconic sites, and immerse yourself in one of the world's art meccas.
Organize a group exchange for your university or join us for our Open Exchange. During this 8-day exchange, you will teach over 100 youth, collaborate with dance majors at the University of Panama, and discover Panamanian history and culture.
A portion of the program donation for these exchanges is used to fund year-round, locally staffed dance programs at orphanages to ensure sustainable dance education for the individuals and communities we serve.
Movement Exchange university chapters engage in local and international dance service in the U.S. and Panama. By joining or starting a chapter, you will:

MOVE TO CHANGE DAY
MOVE TO CHANGE DAY
Move to Change Day empowers individuals and communities to organize free dance classes, workshops, or events. By hosting your own Move to Change Day event, you will be using dance to foster civic engagement, cross-cultural understanding, and creative expression in your local community.
For your Move to Change Day event, you can organize:
We believe that dance encourages:
Community Empowerment: Studies show that individuals in communities with greater access to arts education, such as dance, have increased self-esteem, interpersonal skills, and group cohesion.
Creative Expression: Dance can be used to cultivate an intimate understanding of how your body moves throughout space. This knowledge provides an outlet for conveying ideas and emotions.
Cross-Cultural Understanding: Dance, as a non-verbal form of communication, allows individuals to establish meaningful relationships with others regardless of what language they speak or their economic or social background.

You can become a dance diplomat by attending an international dance exchange, joining or starting a university chapter, or taking part in our annual Move to Change Day.
Movement Exchange's international dance exchanges provides the opportunity for dancers across the U.S. to engage in international dance service. During these exchanges, participants will teach at orphanages and youth foundations, take class from local dance professionals, and discover history and culture through movement.
The only requirement for attending an international dance exchange to Panama or Brazil is a passion for dance and a desire to spread the joy of movement. All levels are welcome!
Types of Dance/Dance Style:
Volunteers of all dance backgrounds are welcome to participate in an international dance exchange and are invited to teach their speciality. In addition to teaching, volunteers will be exposed to various styles including folkloric, aerial, salsa, and contemporary.
Teaching experience is not required before attending an international dance exchange. During our discussions, we will be reviewing teaching methods and curriculum planning to provide you with the resources you need to be a successful dance educator.
Who You Will Teach:
You will be teaching youth ages 4 to18 years old in a variety of orphanages, youth foundations, and arts foundations with about 20-40 students at each organization. Many of the youth we work with are HIV positive, disabled, come from abusive homes and/or have little or no family.
What You Will Teach:
This depends on your background and interests. The youth are receptive to almost anything, provided you make it fun. Past classes have included ballet, jazz, chinese ribbon dance, belly dancing, modern, and capoeira.
For the exchange to Panama, the pricing is as follows: $1,390 for students and $1,590 for non-students, with a non-refundable $500 deposit due three months before the exchange. For the exchange to Brazil, the pricing is as follows: $2,500 for students and $2,700 for non-students, with a $700 deposit due four months before the exchange. Remember that your program donation contributes to our year-round, locally staffed dance education programs.
Foreign Language Requirements:
There are no foreign language requirements to attend an international dance exchange. You will have a 24/7 guide who speaks both English and the language of the host country.

Starting a chapter:

Becoming an Official Student Organization:
Each school has a different process for how to become an officially recognized student organization on campus. Visit your student activities center or contact them via email to learn more about the requirements for becoming an official student organization.
Organizing an International Dance Exchange for a Chapter:
Organize a group of at least 10 students who want to participate on an exchange and send us the dates you would like at least three months before the exchange.
